Cosmic Silence

The Earth’s surface and conventional laboratories are subject to a constant flux of extraterrestrial particles known as cosmic rays. Cosmic rays are particles originating from the sun and other stars, such as novae and supernovae, as well as various galactic processes occurring throughout the universe. On average, a particle derived from cosmic rays intersects every square centimetre of the Earth’s surface per second. As a constant background noise, cosmic rays mask interactions of rare, low-mass particles such as neutrinos. Therefore, the study of neutrinos necessitates the filtration of these high-energy particles. By utilising the mountain as a shield, one can achieve the condition known as “cosmic silence,” a condition of minimal interference essential for precise observation.
