Axes Mundi

The axis mundi, or cosmic axis, refers to a perceived connection between the celestial, terrestrial, and subterranean realms. Theorised by Mircea Eliade in the mid-20th century, this concept represents a vertical structure or centralised point that facilitates the intersection of disparate domains, encompassing spiritual, mythological, and cosmological traditions. Functioning as a material manifestation of the sacred, the axis mundi is articulated through archetypal elements such as mountains and trees, alongside anthropogenic constructs including towers, ladders, staircases and maypoles.
